Northumberland angler nets top prize as Thrunton Long Crag fishery hosts national finals of Troutmasters competition

A young angler representing Thrunton fishery hooked the youth title at the finals of the national Troutmasters competition, for juniors and youths, which were held last weekend at Thrunton Long Crag fishery, writes Bob Smith. The fishery looked immaculate for the competitors and their parents, who had travelled a long way in some cases. Youngsters were there from Dorset, Wales and Scotland. It rained heavily at the start but it stopped and dried up before lunch. The trout were coming to the nets regularly because these young people knew how to cast and catch fish. Read more…

Jack Blakey, who lives near Northallerton and attends Richmond School, has become a member of the England Youth Fly Fishing Team which competed against other home nations in Wales recently. The England team of 15 took part in the event at Llyn Clywedog, a reservoir in mid Wales, last month. The 12-year-old has been fishing for the last five years. Loch Long Salmon was blocked last year by the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park authorities. The company seeking to bring salmon farming systems to Loch Linnhe has confirmed public consultation events for its proposed development. Loch Long Salmon has submitted a Proposal of Application Notice notice to Argyll & Bute Council for a closed containment at sea salmon farm near Lurignish cattle farm. Read more…
Newark Angling Club: Loch Ba competition outing report

THE Newark Angling Club held their Fly Only and All Lures competition on Loch Ba on the Rannoch moor. The 22 anglers who made the journey would return a total of 52 wild brown trout. The anglers fishing the fly were competing for the Bobby Lynn trophy for heaviest fish returned on the fly. Heaviest Bag returned on the fly would take the club’s fly champion and claim the Newark Salver. Read more…

OUT of the many accolades already attributed to Lake Vyrnwy, near Llanfyllin, another can be now bestowed – the most Instagrammable place to fish in Wales! The Powys lake has come sixth overall in a recent index of the best places to both cast a line and cast for likes on the popular social media app. The index, compiled by Fishing Republic, an online guide to fishing in the United Kingdom, shows Lake Vyrnwy to be sixth in the UK overall and the only body of water in Wales to be included in the top 10.
