A proposal by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to ban all salmon fishing in Welsh rivers — and the English stretch of the Wye — has been described, by local anglers, as a last-ditch desperate attempt to cover up 20 years of failed policies. New exhibition on history of salmon fishing on the River Tweed opens in Berwick

A new exhibition charting the history of salmon fishing on the River Tweed has opened. Berwick-upon-Tweed Civic Society’s annual exhibition in The Main Guard, Palace Street, runs alongside the permanent exhibition on its history as a garrison town. There are a number of interesting items on display including a net and traditional fishing paraphernalia, a gown worn by a Tweedmouth Salmon Queen, information boards and videos. Read more…

Dounreay Fly Fishing Association’s 2023 Boat League is shaping up to be very interesting with new names already featuring at the top of the table and on results sheets after just two competitions. The latest event, an all-lochs evening session, was held last Friday with only lochs Calder and Watten being fished due to others being stirred up by recent strong winds. However, by the 6pm start, the wind had fallen to very light and variable with some cloud cover and that lasted to lines up at 10pm. Read more…
Clean-up continues after farm spill “disaster” on tributary burn of Angus salmon river

North Esk beat owners fear the damage done when tonnes of digestate poured into the Black Burn on the Angus/Aberdeenshire border will have a lasting impact on the ecology of the river. A clean-up is continuing days on from a pollution spill which killed young fish stocks in a tributary burn of one of Scotland’s best salmon rivers. Environment agency Sepa say they are still to ascertain the full impact of the incident on the River North Esk at the border of Angus and Aberdeenshire. But the owner of the nearest salmon beat branded it a “disaster”. Read more…

The delight on the faces of novice anglers was there for all to see, and the relief. Arms were raised in triumph once a trout was safely in the net. Close by, an angler hooked into another trout and the fish put up a great fight. A quick picture and then the fish was returned to the water to fight another day. These were two scenes from chilly Pottishaw near Whitburn on night two of the introduction to fishing course being run by West Lothian Angling Association (WLAA). Around 20 anglers were there, from a youngster accompanied by his mum, to teenagers with experienced fishing grandads in tow, to those who regularly fish The Almond with mixed result but who wanted to extend their knowledge and their skill.
