Plans for inflatable assault course at trout fishery approved

A new inflatable obstacle course at a trout fishery has been given the green light. Conwy County Council’s planning department granted permission for applicant James Mcallister to run the attraction at Graiglwyd Springs, Penmaenmawr. The inflatable attraction will see thrill-seekers take to the water to tackle the obstacle course when the fishery is out of season. Read more…

Charity aims to share founder’s love for fishing with cancer patients. Cancer & Pisces Trust is opening its third venue at Albury Estate Fishery near Guildford on Monday, May 13. The charity educates and entertains cancer patients and carers by showing them how to fly-fish. The idea started in January 2021 when fly fishing expert Marina Gibson and Mick May created the Cancer & Pisces trust at the Swinton Park Hotel in North Yorkshire. The duo created a fly-fishing experience for cancer patients and their carers. Read more…

Illegal River Itchen fisherman fined after catching salmon and trout

A man has been fined after he was caught illegally fishing for Salmon and Trout in the River Itchen. Alex Ferrucci was hit with a £100 fine in his absence on Friday after he admitted to fishing in the River Itchen at Riverside, Bishopstoke without a licence. He also pleaded guilty to contravening a byelaw in respect of fisheries in that he stored fish in a keepnet of less than two metres in length. Read more…

Kevin McCabe won the first heat of the Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship held at the Lake of Menteith, beating 42 other anglers. McCabe of Change Fly Fishing Angling Club hooked into 21 fish for 42lb 14.8oz and was well ahead of the second-placed angler, George Telford of Avonbank Fishery who are based at Millhall near Polmont. He totalled 16 fish for 32lb 12.4oz. Read more...

People in the UK who fish have been warned over a £443 fine. Christopher Way, from Plymouth, has been cruelly fined £443 for an illegal fishing trip in a UK seaside town after making a £7 blunder while casting his line in Cornwall. The fisherman, from York, was caught at Porth Reservoir, Newquay, and found guilty of using an unlicensed rod and line for fishing freshwater fish or eels in regulated waters. The 30-year-old contravened Section 27(1)(a) of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975. Read more…

Shetland salmon exports soar to £135m

Exports of  Shetland farmed salmon rose to £135 million last year amid soaring international demand. Trade body Salmon Scotland’s regional breakdown of the figures showed 14,850 tonnes were exported from Shetland in 2023 – almost a quarter of the national share. Read more…

‘The Charity’ fly fishing competition launched

Members of Lough Lein Anglers’ Association, one of the longest established fishing clubs in Ireland, launched the 36th annual charity open fly fishing competition known as ‘The Charity’ which will be held on April 28. This year’s beneficiaries are Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone. The event is always the most popular event on the fly fishing calendar in Ireland. Spearheaded by Timo O’Sullivan,to date the anglers have raised in excess of €300,000 for deserving charities in Kerry and Cork. Read more…

North West youngsters to showcase at Angling Fair ahead of World Fly Fishing Championships

Four young fishermen from Tyrone and Donegal have the angling world at their feet after they successfully qualified to represent Ireland at the 2024 World Youth Fly Fishing Championships in the Czech Republic this summer. Jacob Griffin, Fintan Carlin, Zack Barnett and Colm Coyle have honed their skills on the local waters of the Mourne, Derg and Finn and they successfully fought off competition for 25 young anglers from all over Ireland at the qualifiers in Blackwater River in County Meath and Laois Angling Centre to take four of the five places on the Irish team. Dever Springs trout fishery closes suddenly and without explanation

Dever Springs, near Barton Stacey, announced on February 23 that it was closed until further notice due to ‘circumstances beyond our control’. A Facebook post said: “Urgent notice. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the fishery is closed until further notice. Please be patient if you are trying to contact us.” The fishery had announced a price increase which was due to come into effect on March 1. Read more…

Fishery invites England Ladies in a drive to welcome female anglers

Rognvald ‘Ronnie’ Robinson is a well-known face at Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs above Balerno in The Pentland Hills, but the 84-year-old does more than just fish. He acts as stand-in bailiff, provides detailed reports on daily catch returns which are an enormous help for the board as regards re-stocking plans and also sits as a committee member on Malleny Angling Ltd, the not-for-profit organisation which administers both waters. Ronnie’s services to the club were celebrated at the annual meeting when the Edinburgh-based angler was awarded the Chairman’s Trophy for an outstanding contribution. Read more…

Season tickets are still available for fishing throughout the season which starts on April 1 at Harlaw and Threipmuir reservoirs situated in The Pentland Hills above Balerno. Alex Rose, secretary of Malleny Angling, said the two waters offer superb trout fishing for the bank angler. Harlaw, he said, has a maximum depth of around 20m and has 1.5miles bank fishing. Anglers have been excited by a new competition to land a new rod being promoted by Kailzie Fishery near Peebles.

You pay £10 to enter and the angler with the heaviest fish at the end of a calendar month collects a Vision Stillmaniac rod supplied by competition sponsors Fishers of Penicuik. The price online is around £319 at the time of writing. Connor Newcombe, owner of Kailzie, said that several sizeable fish have been hooked since the competition started, but he added: “The biggest fish so far is beatable.” Read more…

The opportunity to film here alongside feasting brown bears is one of Todd Moen’s dreams come true. For this 21-minute production, Todd traveled with Royal Wolf Lodge manager Nate Morris as they explored the Brooks and American rivers in SW Alaska. In and out by floatplane from lakes to rivers, they dry fly fished the remote upper reaches of many untouched streams finding incredible insect hatches along the way only navigable by air. After a disastrous 2023 fishing season, Joe Gibbs is hoping for better. Anglers will have noticed that St Mungo, patron saint of salmon, is asleep on the job. He has slipped into the ranks of saints ‘who from their labours rest’. Unlike hard-grafting St Anthony, whom my wife keeps busy in search of lost mobiles and car keys (with a 90% retrieval rate), Mungo has been lollygagging by the rivers of paradise. A new team event for competition fly fishermen has been confirmed for the Lake of Menteith later this year and time is running out to enter. Fishing tackle firm Greys are behind the loch style team championship and 17 teams of four will contest the event to be administered under international rules. The winning team will pocket £3,000 and the runner-up £1,500 and the prizes will be determined by the largest combined catch over two days. This will be made up of anglers bag weights with two fish retained and then fish returned afterwards with each released fish being rewarded with 2lbs to the bag. Read more…

Anglers bid to save wild Atlantic salmon amid extinction concerns

It’s known as the “king of fish”, helping provide more than £100m a year to Scotland’s economy. But there’s growing concern the wild Atlantic salmon could become extinct. Anglers in Perthshire claim the Scottish Government’s response to tackling the issue is too slow and are calling for urgent action to protect the fish and rural communities. “At the current rate, the fish could be extinct by 2050,” said Bob Mason from the Tay Ghillies Association. Carp continue to show at Newbarn Angling Centre in good numbers and Ethan Gardner, a previous Fish of the Month winner fished a 24 hour session and landed five Carp well into the 20lbs mark. There were three Commons and two mirrors, one of which was a really pretty fish, all were landed on a Five Star baits Pina colada pop up, which can be purchased on site. Read more…

Southern Water fined £330,000 for stream pollution that killed 2,000 fish

Southern Water has been fined £330,000 after raw sewage escaped into a stream for up to 20 hours killing 2,000 fish after the water company failed to respond to an alarm set off by failing equipment. The water company was sentenced at Southampton Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to a breach of environmental regulations regarding the pollution and operation of Little Bull pumping station in the case brought by the Environment Agency. A Wishaw children’s charity has benefited from a generous donation from a Lanarkshire fishing group. Les Hoey, from the DreamMaker Foundation, was delighted to be part of the United Clyde Angling Protective Association (UCAPA) opening of the salmon season in the Clyde Valley. And thanks to a raffle that will be split by the DreamMaker Foundation and Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS), it means both charities will be £1000 better off. Read more…

You all remember the first time you got out fished by a complete stranger on the ice or in open water? Maybe it has never happened to you, but although it has happened many times over my nearly five decades of fishing, two moments stand out for me as a fisherman and a fly tier. The first moment I remember was on the ice, as I watched a guy pulling in crappie after crappie in a shallow back channel of a lake I fish. Match 5 of the seven leg Edinburgh New Year Shore League is at the west end of  Portobello Beach on Friday, fishing from 7pm to 10pm. The competition is sponsored by The Edinburgh Angling Centre, The Fishing Megastore and Cox and Rawle. Mike Kyle from Easthouses leads the race for the title with 22 points, ahead of Edinburgh angler Stevie Souter, who also has 22 points, with Gordon Lyall, also Edinburgh, third with 19 points. Steve Potts from Tyneside is fourth on 14 points and organiser Ian Campbell from Falkirk has climbed to fifth and is on 13 points. Organisers of the Bass Rock Shore Angling League host the final leg of their winter league on Wednesday, February 28 at a venue to be decided. Read more…

Mr Finn’s fishing book released thanks to Dunbeath writing group

Graham Finn from Dunbeath has penned his first book thanks to a local creative writing group and his subject of fishing seems particularly appropriate given his surname. Independently published on January 29, the book is called ‘Life isn’t Always About Fishing’ and is now available to buy on Amazon. Graham said that Dunbeath and District Centre’s community health and wellbeing hub provided the impetus for his new venture thanks to a creative writing class run at the centre. Read more…

A lake situated along the Berkshire/Buckinghamshire border has been ranked as one of the best to visit for fishing in the UK.

Farlows Lake, which is based in Iver, came in as the fourth greatest in the country, with an average score of 8.24. The survey was conducted by Fishing Republic as they analysed fishing licence requirements, average day permit cost, additional cost for a second rod, availability of night fishing, suitability for beginner anglers, cost of parking, number of fish species, availability of a café/tackle shop, and types of fishing available at a range of locations in the UK to reveal the best spots. Scott Mudie has confirmed the dates for the Kingdom Fly Fishing Championship which will have two heats and a final. Eden Springs hosts heat one on Saturday, June 1, and there are 26 spaces and Ballo Fishery is the venue for heat two on Sunday, July 14, and there are 20 spaces here. The final is back at Eden Springs on Saturday, September 28, and there are 26 slots. Entry is £25 and is non-refundable and must be paid before places are confirmed. Read more…

Some fishery owners suffered six-figure damage but there is optimism for 2024 salmon fishing prospects on the North and South Esk. Sunshine greeted anglers on the opening day of the Angus salmon season – in contrast to Storm Babet conditions which left some beat owners with repair bills of more than £100,000. And despite the serious impact on both the South and North Esks, fishers are queuing up to return to their favourite stretches of water.
