Osprey unable to fly for weeks after becoming trapped in fishing nets in Scottish Borders

An Osprey bird was left unable to fly after becoming trapped in fishing nets. The 11-year-old adult male sea hawk was discovered tangled in the fishery equipment by a ranger in the Scottish Borders last month. He was taken into the care of animal welfare officers from the Scottish SPCA (SSPCA), who determined he was left with a potential shoulder injury. Read more…

We are now into the harbour seal season. Several pups have been admitted in the last two weeks. These pups all came from the east coast. They were found alone, looking pretty miserable. Initially these pups were rescued by volunteers from British Divers Marine Life Rescue. These people have done training courses and learnt how to rescue seals, dolphins and whales. Read more…

Newark Angling Club: Loch Lubnaig outing report

NEWARK Angling Club made the journey to Loch Lubnaig recently. The 22 anglers returned excellent bags of the loch’s wild brown trout. The club members were competing for three trophies on the loch. The Hugh Coyle trophy, fished for by the senior members, was won by Gilbert Bradley, who returned the heaviest trout. He also returned two nice brown trout to get on the points board. Read more…

Marine environmentalists have reacted with concern at news the UK will allow commercial fishing of bluefin tuna for the first time in 60 years. On Monday, the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced that 10 licences would be issued for a small-scale trial of commercial fishing, with the tuna brought ashore for consumption, with data from the operation used to inform future decisions. Millhall Loch near Polmont continues in fine form, with lots of anglers commenting on the hard-fighting qualities of the fish. Better catches this week have gone to those anglers fishing lures, on both floating and sinking lines, with damsels being the top performing fly. Buzzer, diawl bach and cruncher patterns still took plenty of fish but it was noticeable that the better returns went to lure anglers. Northumberland angler nets top prize as Thrunton Long Crag fishery hosts national finals of Troutmasters competition

A young angler representing Thrunton fishery hooked the youth title at the finals of the national Troutmasters competition, for juniors and youths, which were held last weekend at Thrunton Long Crag fishery, writes Bob Smith. The fishery looked immaculate for the competitors and their parents, who had travelled a long way in some cases. Youngsters were there from Dorset, Wales and Scotland. It rained heavily at the start but it stopped and dried up before lunch. The trout were coming to the nets regularly because these young people knew how to cast and catch fish. Read more…

Jack Blakey, who lives near Northallerton and attends Richmond School, has become a member of the England Youth Fly Fishing Team which competed against other home nations in Wales recently. THE Newark Angling Club held their Fly Only and All Lures competition on Loch Ba on the Rannoch moor. The 22 anglers who made the journey would return a total of 52 wild brown trout. The anglers fishing the fly were competing for the Bobby Lynn trophy for heaviest fish returned on the fly. The Powys lake has come sixth overall in a recent index of the best places to both cast a line and cast for likes on the popular social media app. The index, compiled by Fishing Republic, an online guide to fishing in the United Kingdom, shows Lake Vyrnwy to be sixth in the UK overall and the only body of water in Wales to be included in the top 10. Fishing industry support “doesn’t go far enough”

Cornwall Council has voted to show its support for Cornwall’s fishing industry, but some councillors have criticised the motion as saying it says “nothing new” and will have no practical impact. A meeting of the full council on Tuesday, July 25 voted in favour of a motion put forward by councillors from across the chamber, including Mebyon Kernow, the Independents and the Conservatives, that its members recognise and note “the significant contribution made by Cornwall’s fishing industry to the Cornish economy, Cornwall’s ports and harbours, and our maritime communities”. The RSPCA has issued a warning to new and inexperienced anglers as National Fishing Month gets underway, after the number of calls in 2022 reporting wildlife injured by fishing litter almost doubled over the summer – with 186 reports in July compared to 94 in January.
